FOX INTERVIEW
What does your race schedule look like for 2010? 2011?
This year my focus is mostly on the UCI World Cups with a couple USA races, Canadian races, a Swiss Cup and of course World Championships in Canada. Then some fun smaller local stuff for training.
Tell us about your bike setup.
Trek 9.9 hardtail and 9.9 Top Fuel with FOX suspension and Shimano components. Nothing but the best!
What else is in your garage?
Well, theres 4 people in my family that race (7 that ride) so it's definitely your typical cyclist storage area with bikes, bike parts, and tools everywhere. Not much room for anything else other than a couple recycling and garbage bins.
What's your training regimen?
Depends where I am and what time of year I guess. I love volume (lots of hours) with destinations like coffee or lunch or coffee and lunch :)
Any major injuries, and how did you recover?
Touch wood, none. I do remember sitting in the hospital til midnight the night before Canadian National Champs in 2006 cause I had sliced my leg open after I pulled off to the side of the trail to watch some riders attempt a tricky rock climb section on the course and the rock pile I was standing on broke loose.
What's your typical pre-race meal? Guilty pleasure?
I'm not much of a pasta fan … I do love yams/sweet potatos with fish or chicken and salad the night before. For breakfast I finally got over the "Ensure" drink thing and eat fruit and oatmeal. Candy … Guilty!
What is your pre-race OCD behavior?
I still get pretty nervous before races so I typicly like to be on my bike and warming up early to relax and feel ready to go.
How do you determine which races to enter each year?
My team and coach :)
What are some of your best memories?
BEST memory? I wouldn't even know where to start to be honest. If I'm smiling or my camera is out, then to me, that's a memory worth making.
What motivated you to get started racing?
My two older brothers. I used to stand in the feed zone every weekend at the races for them and admire the fun they had on group night rides. I always wanted to be part of it.
What separates you from other professional athletes?
Our dad says us Battys have strong bones … haha does that count?
How does FOX Racing Shox contribute to your success?
Since I've started working with FOX, we've done constant product testing to dial in the bikes perfectly. I think I speak for the entire team when I say FOX's feedback has helped us dial in the bikes suspension settings to its fullest potential!
What would you be doing if you weren't a professional athlete?
I used to want to be a teacher or wedding planner but now I could see myself doing something in Sport Marketing. Maybe get a head start on a family?
What's the best thing about being a professional athlete?
Experiencing all the different life-styles and foods in the different countries, meeting the people I have met, always striving to get faster/fitter … I could go on and on.
What other sports are you interested in?
When I stop and think about it, they're all winter sports like snowmobiling, snowshoeing, snowboarding, and XC skiing. I would like get back into Cyclocross again this Fall/Winter.
Any advice to the readers dreaming to turn pro?
It won't happen overnight. Be patient and try to learn something from every conversation you have along the way.
How many hours a week are you on Facebook?
Haha … currently on Facebook as I fill this out so probably too many.
Are you a gamer? What are your favorite games?
oh definitely not a "gamer"! o you know how much energy you waste playing those things?!?
What are your favorite magazines and websites?
Well my boyfriend reads every cycling website and magazine out there so that's pretty much how I stay up to date. I do love reading Cyclingnews, Canadiancycling, everyone's personal blogs and websites (which usually link to more cycling sites), Twitter, www.cyclingdirt.org.
Favorite movie quote?
I just heard one the other day in a song … something about "The only thing that seperates us as people are our thoughts". Strong words.
Who is your hero?
My Mom & Dad. If I could be half as great as they are I would be happy!!! And Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjá cause she's simply amazing.
I love Colour and Candy
I want a World Champion medal
I believe in family
