The Weyhrich brothers poured on the steam in the last 100-miles of the 450-mile desert race billed as the "Longest Off Road Race in the United States," taking the Class 1500 victory and claiming the top prize in the American desert.
Racing point-to-point from Las Vegas to Reno, Nevada, throughout some of the harshest desert terrain in the United States, Gary and Mark Weyhrich, rallied for 7 hours-49 minutes-23 seconds before capturing the top spot in the Class 1500 Unlimited Buggy Class.
Class 1500 is the Unlimited Buggy class in which race cars and trucks reached speeds of 130 miles an hour as the skim across the desert, something the Weyhrich brothers know very well. They have used FOX Racing Shox products for many seasons on both their Class 1500 buggies and their latest race vehicle, an Unlimited Trophy Truck, which they debuted this season.
However, for this year's Vegas to Reno desert race they stuck with the winning combination of pure talent and a proven winning race car, the Weyhrich Class 1500 two-seat buggy.
On race day they faced August desert temperatures that soared well-above the 100 degree mark and tested the efforts of both man and machine. The desert floor of Nevada is well-known for its powdery soft dirt known to desert racers worldwide as "silt."
"Silt is probably the worst of the worst," explained FOX Racing Shox Race Support Manager, Todd Tenbroek who also is the co-driver/navigator for Baja 1000 Champion, Andy McMillin, who races in the Unlimited Trophy Truck class.
"Nevada's silt is so thick at times that it blacks out the inside of the race truck cab momentarily. The #31 McMillin race truck ran well, but we had some issues with cross-threaded lug nuts that put us enough behind that we were unable to stay with the leaders. We had a successful race but we hope to be on top at the next race," explained Tenbroek.
