02.25.10 LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Rob MacCachren, the reigning SNORE 1600 and OVERALL Series Champion, arrived to Primm, Nevada to defend his 2010 Championship title against a huge field of ultra competitive 1600 racers all hoping to unseat the undisputed king of 1600 racing.
The first race of the 2010 SNORE Series saw over 400 racers roll through contingency and technical inspection. Hosted at the Buffalo Bill's Casino on the border of California and Nevada, race fans and teams lined the race course along the huge spectator area. Inclement weather threatened to turn the barren desert into a mud bog, however the storm front held off all weekend long making for near perfect racing conditions.
On day one of the two day closed course desert race, Rob MacCachren unleashed the ROCKSTAR Energy Racing 1600 single-seat Alumi Craft race car and claimed the top spot after starting the race in the middle of the pack. The reigning champ pushed hard picking off car-after-car. He ended his 60-mile race day in the top spot with a one minute and one second lead over Adam Pfankuch.
Sunday's final 60-miles was not without drama. MacCachren, Pfankuch, Hawley and McMillin all started on the front row in Sunday's race and as quick as the green flag dropped the four racers charged wheel-to-wheel in search of the lead. For the first time in many races, MacCachren was able to pull away from the others at the line and run in front in clean air.
The ROCKSTAR Energy Racing #1600 race car began to open up the gap from the field, however, Adam Pflankuch stayed very close to the bumper of the Alumi Craft-built car. In fact, mile-after-mile resulted in Pfankuch and MacCachren running within seconds of each other nearly the entire race.
MacCachren led physically as well as on corrected time leading into the final lap and with only 6-miles left in the race the radio crackled from the #1600 race car. "I think I broke the front end."
MacCachren punished his race car all weekend long and with 6-miles to go the right front spindle broke apart. In classic Rob MacCachren fashion, he nursed his ROCKSTAR Energy Racing single-seat Alumi Craft race car through the desert ever so gingerly.
Pfankuch passed MacCachren along the lakebed coming into the final mile down through main pit and took the checkered flag first physically. Although, MacCachren wasnt far behind and as he took the checkered flag in his broken race car, he earned his second 1600 victory of the 2010 season.
MacCachren said at the finish line, "Well it wasn't easy today. We had to overcome some obstacles and nurse the broken spindle to the finish line, but we ended up making it. Adam and Luke ran real fast today and I'm happy we were able to win after having some issues late in this race. I cant say enough about everyone who helps our program all season long. We have some great sponsors that contribute in all aspects of my racing endeavors and thats how were able to race all season long. Thanks to everyone for your continued support."
