WORLD CUP SERIES ROUND 7 RESULTS: TEAM ANIMAL COMMENCAL
The penultimate round of the Nissan UCI World Cup Series brought mixed fortunes for Team Animal Commencal.Once again the weather played a big part in the weekend’s results in Bromont with the rain soaking the course in the days leading up to the race.
DOWNHILL
A burst of blue skies and sun helped dry out the open areas of the track for race day however the wooded sections remained muddy making the rock and rooted sections of the course complicated.
American Aaron Gwin set the time to beat shaving 0.25 seconds off the previous fastest run posted by Mick Hannah.
Gee then bumped Gwin to take a brief hold of the top spot only to be ousted by eventual race winner Greg Minnaar.
Gee finished in 4th place and a mere 1.03 seconds separated the British rider from the South African Minnaar.
Gee remains in 4th position in the World Cup Series standings and is only 141 points off the overall leader meaning it’s all to race for in the final event of the season.
4X
Bromont was voted the top 4X track of the 2008 World Cup Series but it might not be too popular with riders after this year with several crashing out in the early rounds.
Dan ‘Athy’ Atherton was in a strong position for the top spot after winning all the qualifying rounds however a three rider crash in the final left a clear run for Joost Wichmann to take the win.
Dan took a big hit to his shoulder but despite riding much of the course with one handed, he came home in third position to take a spot on the podium.
Athy will have an x-ray on his shoulder when the Team returns to the UK but is not expected to miss any of the final races of the season.
The Team will be heading out to Australia for the World Championships (1-6 September) as Gee bids to hold onto the Rainbow jersey and defend his title.
The last race of the 2009 World Cup Series takes place in Schladmig, Austria (18-20th September).
